A budget, space saving alternative to carillons that created the bell sounds via metal rods were systems that used tapes or records to play pre-recorded bell music.

Carillon systems using records are known to exist, but are extremely rare. I've seen very few pictures of these, and I'm not sure how many of them, if any, are still in operation, as one can't easily tell by the sound what format is being used.
Occasionally, the records used in these systems show up for sale, like in this Ebay listing, which includes a "Schulmetronic" record likely used in a carillon (the other record is likely an unrelated consumer record).
I also saw one show up on a Reddit post somewhere. I can't remember much else about it though.
Here's a Forum post about a carillon made by a company called "Electron Bell". For some reason you can't look at the images full size unless you log in, I don't remember having to do that when I first found the page. Apparently the company had a record label as well, but other than this, I can't find anything else about them.

A type of system that is potentially even rarer are systems that use reel to reel tapes. These likely fell out of favor quickly due to the need to thread the tape.
The only manufacturer I can find for this sort of system is a company called Norton. This Facebook post has some detailed photos of one of these machines.

Most systems of this type used 4 track (AKA Fidelipac) cartridges. These were well suited to the task because they run in an endless loop, and are very durable.
One of the more common tape player systems was the Schulmerich MagneBell. It was usually sold as either a tabletop unit or a rack mounted system. The rack mount systems could sometimes also have a chime rod unit installed for peals or hourly chimes.
